Modern morals.
A friend asked me tonight to borrow £20 for some cocaine. He's by no means an addict but it certainly wasn't his first time either. I don't do drugs. None. Never have and I don't think I ever will (not in the immediate future at least). He promised to pay me back on Wednesday and I know he will but in lending him the money I'm unable to go out tomorrow (to see his band play ironically). He's a very very close friend and he's lent me money before when I know he's needed it, but never for something which could potentially do me serious harm get me locked up.

I've already made my decision but what do you think I should have done?

Ah! I see.
Well I don't think he'll get locked up just for having £20 worth of cocaine on him. I don't really think he'll have much of a night on that little amount so I wouldn't worry too much about it.


Sorry but being an ex abuser of illegals, I don't have much of a problem with it unless he's still young.

No, I would not give the loan
I have disgracefully dragged myself into my 40's in reasonable health, with almost all of my old friends still alive by sticking to a simple rule.

You want to spend your hard earned money on drugs, fine. I did so for a number of years and had a jolly fine time for the most part.

But when you get to the stage that you need to start borrowing beyond your means... even that first fiver for a blim or two to see you off to sleep or more for a baggie of charlie to perk you up, pray to the god of your choice that you have a good friend to smack you upside your head and bring you back to reality.

I have had the upside of my head smacked when I was younger, and returned the favour when needed.

Borrowing money to buy drugs is the teetering edge of a pit you do not want to fall into or see your friends fall into!

I'd have said no, for two reasons...
1. It's your money and you've earned the right to use it to go out, not for him to snort it.
2. Cocaine turns people into cunts.

the £20 would have helped him as you said by other means, as well as helped him stay off the drugs for a while longer.

forget the fact that it's for cocaine
if you lend him the money you can't go out. therefore you can't spare the money.
