Love, Actually
So I've been wondering for a while now: Is 'Love, Actually' the smuggest film there has ever been?

Love, Actually
I couldn't think of a film that came even close in its smugness.

I had to look up
Martine McCutcheon to find out who she is.
Google Image turns up some shots of her that are almost impossibly perky, as though gravity wasn't touching her. Phwoar!

Well, it wasn't what I was expecting, is all.
Then again, a Google search for almost any female celeb will produce such photos. She just happens to look much better than most.

You've now got me thinking.
I've spent a good ten minutes trying to think of a more smug film.
And I can't. I thought Four Weddings might be a rival, but then I remembered that it's not all that smug, it just isn't fucking funny*.
I thought, perhaps, Independence Day might rival it, being two hours of loud-mouthed, godblessamerica, gung-ho bullshit. But no, it's just sufficiently over-patriotic to make me want to vomit the partially digested remains of Will Smith over every square inch of Hollywood.
But it did pose the question: who is more unforgivably smug? Hugh Grant or Will Smith?
(Oh, and I must also conclude that you're right: there is no smugger film than Love Actually.)
*Yes, Richard Curtis, you may have co-written Blackadder, but Four Weddings is two wasted hours of my life I'm never going to get back, you smug fucker.

Independence Day
You watched Independence day and found Will Smith to be more smug than Jeff Goldblum?

Smug, but funny.
Love, Actually is unquestionably smug but it's also funny. Perspective, folks. All Independence Day had by way of comic relief was Will Smith punching an alien and stealing his plane.
Now, "The Day After Tomorrow" - utterly irredeemable.

Smith v Glodblum
Maybe I've misplaced the "smug" label there...there is something revoltingly self-confident about Jeff Glodblum in that film as well. Perhaps I just found Will Smith to be a bit more ubiquitously obnoxious.
But put them together, such as in that final scene, where they're sat in the spaceship smoking fucking cigars, and you have an absolute critical mass of fundamental smug.
Regarding Love Actually, yes, I'll concede that Bill Nighy made me laugh. The rest of the film made me want to scream.
