Mushrooms, lentils, chickpeas (dried) rice and spices are great staples.
Frozen vegetables in bulk are good value. Use your several hundred takeaway containers you have lying around to store leftovers for another day. Aldi and Lidl aren't actually that much cheaper if you're only buying cheap food so just go to the closest supermarket.

Cos whenever I buy them the loose ones look battered to shit and those in boxes have 5mm of water in the bottom
and even if you take them out of the box soon as you're home they still go off

Frozen veg sounds about right, all sorts of stuff I can knock up with it. I've always got peas and sweetcorn frozin, but I could get some squash or something.
