The theory I find quite convincing 're them never banning guns is that it makes America almost unoccupiable because you'd end up fighting a guerrilla war against an armed populace for years.

And the fact it has friendly borders top and bottom and oceans either side. That's what'd put me off trying to occupy the USA.
