Something I wanted to ask you internet-savvy people.
Many a time I sit down at my bottom of the range Dell laptop, for to do some typing while a-listening to some music. I've not plugged in the wireless router as (see: tightwads) it burns electricity like nobody's business. So, why does the totally un-helpful laptop pop up to tell me every four and a half seconds that it can't find a wireless network when I've not asked it to?
Is there any way I can turn this function off so that it will stop looking for an internet connection and just let me get on with my work?
Thanks.

Erm...
There's usually a switch on the actual laptop, beyond that, I'm a little stuck.

An Inspiron, Latitude?
The old Latitudes had a keyboard based switch (see Inspiron bit), but recent (+/- 2 years old) Latitudes have a switch halfway along the chassis on the left-hand side.
The Inspirons usually have a keyboard based switching system. Press and hold the Blue-lettered [Fn] key and press [F2].

erm
There's definitely a way as my ex did it. Not sure how, though I would hazard a guess that it was through Control Panel, probably in network or internet.
Sorry for the vagueness.

In XP?
Network Connections, right click the wireless network and click 'Disable'. That should stop it.
You will, of course, have to turn it back on when you want to use the interwebs.

My Inspiron
has a switch on the right hand side near the front. Of course, you've probably solved it now :)
