has been having a problem with sleeping through morning classes.
I think I have a solution.
I'm going to build a framework that will stand beside his bed, consisting of a post with an articulated arm that's normally standing upright. An alarm clock will be built into the base part, but its switch will be out of reach unless you get out of bed.
If you don't get out of bed within thirty seconds, a solenoid pulls down the articulated arm. At the end of this are is an electric motor. Attached to the shaft of the motor are two or more strips of rubber. So if you don't get out of bed and shut it off, it will start slapping you awake.
I imagine that it would only have to go off like that once- waking up to being at the bottom of a girly fight would be rather rude.
This thought has been making me giggle all day.

One: I thought you meant he had a problem of falling asleep in the classes, so expected the solution to be a pair of novelty glasses with pretend eyes on them, a la Homer Simpson.
Two: it would only take one crude, slappy wake up for me to introduce the machine to Mr Smashy Hammer.
However, it's something that would amuse me if I were to see it in action, on someone who wasn't me! I like the idea.

would be to enter the room with Mr Smashy Hammer.
I used to wake my brother up in the mornings with a twelve inch kitchen knife.
Happy days.

Otherwise it wouldn't be an issue- a glass of ice water is very effective.
His roommate either also sleeps through it or just shuts it off.
I think Mr. Happy Slappy is the answer. Now I just need to enlist the aid of one of the electrical engineers here in designing the circuits for this.
It could be one of the funniest things ever...
