Apart from as a means to an end, why do people drink vodka? It doesn't taste of anything. My mate went to Russia last year and brought me back a bottle of Stolichnaya. It was exceptionally smooth for vodka and had no roughness to it at all.
How can one enjoy a drink if the only quality it has is its intoxication qualities.
Yes, it can be used as a base or a mixer or whatever, but on its own? Water is cheaper and has the same lack of taste, and there is every other alcohol beverage out there that actually tastes of something if you want to get trousered.

..and savour it.
Vodka is not just vodka, unless you're mixing it.
Buy some Morrisons value shit, and mix it with Pepsi Max - great drink that gets you fucked when you're skint. But don't drink that vodka on its own, whatever you do.
However if you do a bit of research - maybe ask your local booze emporium to ask you to taste a few examples - then you can shell out 20-odd quid for some vodka that should be enjoyed on its own and not adulterated. And if you don't like a shot of 42 Below from a bottle that's been in the freezer an hour then you don't like vodka.

..for a quid or so cheaper you might as well go with Smirnoff.. or for the same price get the Russian Standard stuff. Stolichnaya is all about the image.. lots of adverts and a very cool looking bottle but very average vodka - the money goes on the marketing with that one.

is shite. I'm talking about the stuff from Russia. Well, it had a very faint taste of icing-sugar about it.
So, this 42-below. What does it actually taste of?

is for people who like to get drunk but don't like the taste.
I tend to stick with beer and whiskeys. Wine is okay with dinner, but if I'm going to just enjoy some alcohol, it doesn't work well for me. I can drink scotch all night and as long as I have a couple of glasses of water before bed I feel great the next morning. If I do that with wine or with mixed drinks, I'll be puking and shitting all day.

..hmm.. it's been a long time since I've been able to justify buying some so I can't remember exactly. But it is as smooth as vodka gets, but still with a bit of interest and it actually has a complex lingering aftertaste - you can't say that about many vodkas.
@resident loon.. yeah generally vodka is about getting shit-faced without caring about flavour. But vodka does differ, if you have the palate to discriminate (my last job, the first job I've ever enjoyed, was in the drinks industry, and hopefully my next will be too, so I know a bit about this) and some can be really pleasant if tried as a shot or two from a nice chilled bottle. Otherwise, yeah, it's there for you to party like you just don't care.. I too would rather have some decent whisky over the course of a whole evening.. A nice Speyside or maybe Makers Mark - I don't know enough about Bourbon but would very much like to..

to things like whisky
russian Stoli is good shit. I despair of the vodkas you get over here, although the irish stuff Bora is quite nice.
Absolut is for cunts

I can get drunk and not want to rip my head off and throw it down the toilet the next day.
And I quite like the taste actually.
If I get drunk on wine then lock up your sons for the evening and ring the Funeral Parlour for my internment the next day.
Beer is just for when I'm thirsty or for chasing down a curry.
