FAO Northern b3tards
I'm hoping to be moving to Manchester in the new year and I need advice on the areas of Manchester.

A couple of my friends live on Deansgate locks in the new builds, but to be frank, their flat is pokey and not worth it at £500pm.

I currently live in quite a large 2 bedroom flat and don't want to have to downgrade by too much, but obviously I'm aware that city centre living comes at a price. I wouldn't mind downgrading to a 1 bed as long as the rest of the flat compensated for it, I have to fit in my entire console collection, a very large rat cage and my pole, which needs enough room to swing a Kitty round it.

My budget is realistically £650 max as I will be renting until the mortgages pick up again and don't want to throw too much money away.

I love quirky flats and so I've seen a lot of converted factories that have gorgeous flats that are quite cheap too, but that makes me think the area is rough, so what I need to know is which roads are nice, which are for students (as I'd like to avoid them) and which ones I'm likely to get murdered and raped on (and probably in that order).

Thanks Mancunian b3tans!

I think

I was on the bus in Manchester on the way to the Man United Celtic game quite recently. At about 3 in the afternoon we saw at the traffic lights either Gary Neville or a cracking lookalike driving a convertible.

Naturally we showed him the veezers. In the likelihood that he was a mere lookalike then I would apologise but he surely knew WHY we had to do it...

Ahem

lived here for a while
Rental is quite cheap outside the city, but the houses are banal. The market collapsed in town centre, which meant landlords let out their flats in town to students, which means that the houses where they used to live - fallowfield and withington are empty. Chorlton is nice, as is Altringham and Sale. I'd move outside to Glossop or even Hebden Bridge and get the train in.

Try Macclesfield
Its about 25minute drive from Manchester centre, regular trains to Manchester and best of all..........me and Agnostic live there :0)

Ta Mancunians
I do really like Chorlton, but we've decided we're going to move there when we're old and grey to raise the currently hypothetical spawn, whilst we're young and vibrant we really are aiming for the centre. What I really need to know is which districts of the city are a bit scary, eg. I like the look of the Nortern Quarter but I've heard Ancoats is rough.

The northern quarter
is nice, I've been looking at flats there. Ancoats is a little bit rough but a lot of the flats in the NQ are more central, just past Piccadilly gardens or Shudehill interchange.

Worsley Mill is in Castlefield, nice area prett much in the centre, and is quirky, it has exposed brickwork and massive ceilings, looks really nice.

If you can hold of the MEN on a Thursday, it has a pretty comprehensive pull-out section on city centre flats and apartments, I'd be happy to get a copy and send it to you if you couldn't get hold of one.
