My boss (and probably his evil missus)
Have been through my inbox while I've been away over the bank hol.

What annoys me the most about this is that the last email they looked at, as it is the one which is open on my screen, is very clearly from my fella to me.

Like they haven't even tried to conceal the fact they've been snooping through my personal mail. Gaaargh.

I'm not sure how you'd stand here legally, but if its a personal email account (e.g., GMAIL) could they be done for hacking?

I think
if it's a company e-mail system, bosses do have the right to check up on employees' e-mail to make sure the system's not being abused.

But I'm not a lawyer, and I may be wrong on this. Certainly if it's a private e-mail account, they've no business looking in it.

it's outlook, and on the boss's computer. I leave it open anyway, but on the principle that out of politesse noone would look.

This is very true
If you don't want someone at work to read it, don't leave it at work, or better still, use a different account. I use my work account for personal mail, but I'm perfectly aware that other people need to log into my e-mail to check things when i'm out of the office.

I'm just annoyed that they broke the unwritten rule of thou shalt not make obvious thy rooting through Psyche's mail.

Use Chrome Incognito
that way you don't need to remember to sign out. Plus it doesn't leave a history.

learnt about that through someone else's mistake at an old workplace.

And every time I started typing into google some poorly spelled porn search would come up... Mens erect penius anyone? do men like women who mastabate?

I spent my first two weeks giggling at the new stuff that would come up.
