I think
if it's a company e-mail system, bosses do have the right to check up on employees' e-mail to make sure the system's not being abused.

But I'm not a lawyer, and I may be wrong on this. Certainly if it's a private e-mail account, they've no business looking in it.

it's outlook, and on the boss's computer. I leave it open anyway, but on the principle that out of politesse noone would look.

This is very true
If you don't want someone at work to read it, don't leave it at work, or better still, use a different account. I use my work account for personal mail, but I'm perfectly aware that other people need to log into my e-mail to check things when i'm out of the office.

Use Chrome Incognito
that way you don't need to remember to sign out. Plus it doesn't leave a history.

learnt about that through someone else's mistake at an old workplace.

And every time I started typing into google some poorly spelled porn search would come up... Mens erect penius anyone? do men like women who mastabate?

I spent my first two weeks giggling at the new stuff that would come up.
