This past year, I've been proofreading my girlfriends and some of people in her english class' homework before they submit it to the teacher. Just minor stuff - they send me a file, and I go though it and fix grammer, spellings etc. The markup tool in Word is great - then I make it a PDF so they can't just print it out, they have to go back and re-type it so they do actually learn from the mistake they're making. I've watched them all improve, in particular one person who's pidgin english has turned in to something you'd expect from QOTW, with the corresponding grade increase from G to MVG (no, I don't know what they stand for).
Someone who I haven't been doing it for appears to have told the teacher about what I've been up to, and just got a rather angry e-mail off her. Oddly enough, her english is worse than her pupils! (Should I send back a corrected version?). Now the entire class is facing being failed for the year because she can't prove who's been sending what to me.
What can you guys suggest as a course of action to get these guys out of trouble? I have a feeling they're going to be made to re-write the whole lot under exam conditions.

E-mail the school head, explaining that you've not been helping the pupils to cheat, but merely improving their education. Support this claim by attaching the e-mail from the class teacher, and pointing out the poor English contained therein.

I'd also suggest a copy of the email from the teacher to you, with the errors highlighted and corrected, and suggesting that the school consider its' recruitment policies.
Not wishing to blow my own trumpet but I can be a bit of a pompous twat when it comes to writing shitty letters to alleged officialdom - let me know if you need some help, I'll be happy to help.

Start collecting together a paper trail of what you've been given, how you sent it back with corrections, what you got in response etc, and get ready to send it to the head with the explanation you just gave us.
Also send the head the original and corrected versions of the teacher's email.
Profit. (Well, you might have this teacher's job next year ;-) )

if you inform them that you have been proof-reading, with mark-up in word and then sending back as pdf then I can't really see how it's a problem. it's essentially like outside tutition to supplement the poor quality of the education they are receiving at school.

Sounds like a fun fight. You might have to change your name to "My Captain"...

Have written an e-mail to the head and and asked girlfriend to proof read it (my swedish is abysmal). It's also got a corrected version of her e-mail, done in exactly the same way I'd do a proof read for her students (unprintable and uncopyable PDF), with the points that you lovely people have made (particularly the one about extra tuition).
This teacher is a bit of a cow... I'd have happily looked after the entire classes english work as there is only 15 of them, and it doesn't take me too long to do each one.

as well as helping with English as a foreign language, you're communicating with the school in Swedish?
Kudos.
In fact, on-knees-we're-not-worthy-we're-not-worthy style kudos.

I have to - the head of language is a spanish teacher, and his english is awful. So Swedish it will have to be. Ok, I'm cheating - I get free translation services.

It's miserable at work, and I could do with a giggle

In MY country there's nothing wrong with getting extra-curricular help from external sources so I don't see what all the fuss is about.
Bit too many "blacks" though....
