How non pc
Just been doing some research for work on Makaton (special needs sign language) and here is the recommended reading list at the end of the article:

Background for the Makaton Vocabulary:

Graham, J.T. & Graham, L.W. (1971) Language behaviour of the mentally retarded: syntactic characteristics. American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 75, 623-629.

Lovell,K. & Dixon, E.M. (1967) The growth of the control of grammar in imitation, comprehension and production in normal and educationally subnormal special school children. Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 8, 31-39.

Lyle, J.G. (1960) The effect of an institution environment upon the verbal development of imbecile children. II: Speech and language. Journal of Mental Deficiency Research, 4, 1-13.

Mein, R. (1961) A study of the oral vocabularies of severely subnormal patients. II: Grammatical analyses of speech samples. Journal of Mental Deficiency Research, 5, 52-62.

Mein, R. & O'Connor, N. A study of the oral vocabularies of severely subnormal patients. Journal of Mental Deficiency Research, 4, 130-143.

O'Connor, N. & Hermelin, B. (1963) Speech and thought in severe subnormality. Oxford: Pergamon Press

Sievers, D.J. & Essa, S.H. (1961) Language development in institutionalized and community mentally retarded children. American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 66, 413-420.

We don't have remedial classes anymore
Oh no, we call them "nurture groups" nowadays.
And patients are "clients".
(, Tue 9 Jun 2009, 19:56, Reply)
I'd nurture your groups.
Will I get the chance on Saturday? *fingers crossed*
(, Tue 9 Jun 2009, 19:57, Reply)

Well, golly!
I was going to not be arsed to go to DiT's stag do, as it was looking like rain, but now it seems rain is unlikely AND DG&T will be attending.

So I'm going to need a better excuse.
(, Tue 9 Jun 2009, 20:12, Reply)
We'll be indoors for the most part, so why would rain be a factor?

(, Tue 9 Jun 2009, 20:13, Reply)
Maybe he's a cat

American Journal of Mental Deficiency
This should be published in at least 30 volumes!
(, Tue 9 Jun 2009, 20:08, Reply)
Hmm
Don't you mean 'The Journal of American Mental Deficiency'?
(, Tue 9 Jun 2009, 21:14, Reply)
I'm pretty certain
Imbecile is a genuine technical term.

As for the rest, well - subnormal, retarded, mentally deficient - these were the PC terms in the 60s, which is where these are from.

Edit: Still pretty amusing though.
(, Tue 9 Jun 2009, 20:10, Reply)
I'm 40 honey, and remember such vocabulary was the norm when I went to school
The irony for me was finding such a book list on a modern website. IMHO political correctness is a pain in the clopper - it's gone way too far. A few years ago, we weren't allowed to refer to black boards or white boards, but had to call them chalk/pen boards. Now we have these new-fangled interactive white boards and suddenly they're called white boards again. wtf?
(, Tue 9 Jun 2009, 20:17, Reply)
just checked that link
I'm still chortling ;o)
(, Tue 9 Jun 2009, 20:19, Reply)
The order is weird
I would have ranked them Idiot, Moron, Imbecile from smartest to dumbest but a moron is way smarter than an idiot.
