But if you've only got real marmalade, I'd have to pretend my iPhone is a slice of toast and cover it in marmalade and eat it. Oh well, at least it'll give me the excuse I need to upgrade to the iPhone 3GS.

i have real orange marmalade but virtual lemon.
real wholemeal+real orange=virtual wholemeal+virtual lemon.

The simple truth is that it's just like any other transaition from a comercial sollution ('Adobe', 'Windows/mac') to a Open Source one ('Notepad++/GIMP/Whatever', 'umbunto/other lynix flaours').... it'll do the same job, some jobs it'll do better, loads of the stuff is free... but it never quite feels as polished and lacks beezle curves.

Its free on a £25 a month contract. (still with unlimited (or at least "unlimited") data).
Its not massively 'wow', but still rather good. I agree with your analogy though, and if I already had a smartphone, I wouldnt be getting this, but since I don't (got a 6300, want something shinier), then I'll go for the rather good but cheap option.
Also, its an open platform with java support, so more apps will become available fairly quickly (there's already one that turns it into a metal detector!, unsure yet whether it goes UUUIIIP! or UUUUUUNNNHHHH!)
