How do I stop
a PS3 from overheating? It keeps spazzing out in the middle of a game and freezing up.

Pour ice water into the vents.

Then it would explode.
Explodey PS3 is not good and not better than freezy PS3.

.
Have you tried seeing if the fan is broken? Maybe the fan just needs cleaning out? Alternatively, check to see if nothing is blocking the air-vents (again, dust could be a cause).

I am a shocking housekeeper.
This could well be the case...

D: not my PS3!
At least, not until I have introduced you to the glory that is LittleBigPlanet!

It has Stephen Fry doing voiceovers. THE MIGHTY LORD FRY, Potty. THAT is how AWESOME this game is :)

It really shouldn't be doing that...
I don't know how easy this will be but try standing it vertically if you can as this helps airflow around the system.

Whether you can do that or not try and keep a few inches of clear space around all sides to allow the air to be cooled, don't keep it in a closed AV cabinet if you can avoid that. If not play with the door open and maybe look at the intercooler (?) aftermarket fans. Googling ps3 fan should find you some clip on USB powered fans for about a tenner.

Other than the above go and buy a can of compressed air of about 6 quid and blow out all the air vents and so on. Don't be tempted to try and Hoover it as the static buildup from that can be bad for electronics.

The PS3 should be quite crash resistant so if yours is it might be worth looking into a warranty claim if it's still possible.

PSN: bdc360 ;)

No, no it shouldn't.
Can't stand it up sadly since the shelf it's on isn't tall enough, but I'll nick my compressed air from work and give it a spritz. It crashed last night and lost 3 hours of my flatmate's Saints Row 2 progress. He was not impressed!

Imagineably so!
Although I'd recommend he played the proper GTA instead of a shitty rip-off and therefore deserves it! ;)

Either...
...exchange it for a 360 or don't inflict arsebucket like Saints Row on it. The poor wee thing.
