Which route are you taking? I'd try and avoid the A1 as there's major bridge works at Gateshead and the delays are supposedly horrendous. Might be quicker to head for the M6 then across the A69 at Carlisle then rejoin the A1 after the roadworks - there's only about 20 mins difference between the two anyway.
Plus the A1 is a shit road to drive on.

Was still debating M6 vs [insert other motorways here] + A1By the sounds of things the M6 is the way to go.
