I'm getting a new mobile phone soon, and I don't think I'm rich enough/enough of a tool to get an Iphone, has anybody got any recommendations?
I've had mostly Nokia's but will go for anything that works consistently. Any extra's (camera, interwebbs, etc) would be a bonus.

Avoid the iPhone - typically Apple - style over functionality.
I bagged myself a HTC Touch HD. Very useful, especially after I loaded TomTom...

If so, how much did you have to pay for the handset?

What country are you located in and who is your carrier. I can provide you with some good recommendations.

Carrier? If that's the same as network then I don't have a preference, my contract is up in a month or so and I'm cancelling it.

I’ve got a Samsung Pixon. T’was a free upgrade some months back, so should be available on most tariffs now. I’m happy enough with it, saying that, I’m not geeky enough to know the ins and outs of all the alternatives.
I got it based on the following. It was free, it has a 5mp camera (that is actually quite good, albeit in ‘good light’ as the flash is gash) and web access meets my (admittedly, fairly low) expectations. Coupled with a qwerty keyboard it does everything I could want. Going against it, when you lash it in you your pocket – in particular when wearing jeans that aren’t that baggy – it is quite easy to knock the lock key, and with it being touch-screen, it is possible to call people surreptitiously.
To be honest though, from the sound of things, most phones offer much the same functionality, the majority of which will have a novelty value of about 5 minutes (like google maps, which can pin-point my location to within 3 miles, rendering he whole gps thing useless).

Which will be fairly cheap now...
Good points:
Good camera / flash
Good room for memory exapnsion (got a free 8GB card)
Looks quite fancy
Touch screen works fine - nice screen.
Bad Points:
Connector for earphones on the phone got damaged. Now I can't plug in headphones for my 8GB+ of music.
The interface is a bit slow/laggy/annoying.
Touch screen can sometimes activate in your pocket.
So all in all and average phone but by no means an iPhone killer. I am intrigued by the HTC's....
