Did you pay by credit or debit card?That's a valid form of proof of purchase. They are not obliged to give you a receipt and therefore they cannot insist upon seeing one. I have used this to my advantage twice. I now keep receipts though as it's much easier than arguing the toss with some numpty who hasn't just read up on their statutory rights.
