Evening Mallie
We're going through something similar. As well as preparing ourselves for a feature in an industry-magazine, we've got some stuff to get ready for an important trade show. The office is buzzing with activity at the moment. What a time for my ear/headache :-(

Tell me about it; I desperately need a week off
but we're slammed. Especially as my mother has chosen to descend on me in a couple of weeks' time. Do not fucking want.

Gah!
I too could do with some time off. Even though my earache let me take the day off, it's still doing my head in, and spent most of the day in bed.

I need something non-painful
to allow me a few days' grace to recharge my batteries, so I can sit on the couch all day.

Only thing I can think of is pulling a sickie
Am sort of wondering whether or not I'll be in work tomorrow, but I'll see how it goes.

My job is precious, so I'm not sure if it's a risk I'm willing to take.
My boss is trying to persuade me to take my mother somewhere...

Know what you mean
I daren't even pull a sickie myself, but have been known to ... ahem ... allow for some extra recovery time.

If you take your mother somewhere where the distraction really is a distraction, it will make being with your mother less intolerable.
