they're just regular old jelly bracelets, I have no idea how it started but I was 19 when I first heard of them
almost 27 now, so they've been around for a while, I'm pretty sure whomever you do something with is supposed to give you a bracelet, the color corrosponding to whatever you did

They've been around in Aus since at least 1998 when I was starting primary school. they're still around now.
