most of the advice seems to be along the lines of
1. stop sysguard.exe process
2. delete sysguard.exe file

in principle,

but these things usually leave some other kind of trace behind as well, which starts up again five minutes later

i just decided to bite the bullet, back things up and reformatted. the fucking virus wasn't letting me download anything. hell, i couldn't even get close to an anti-virus website without the browser crashing.
ta for the suggestions. now that my system's clean, time to get better anti-virus protection.
