Damn
That's a shame. That's likely to bring the total of 'bands around today that I like that aren't old dinosaurs still soldiering on' back down to 1: Airbourne. And they're good but equally hilarious in an irony-free cliched style.

Airbourne were great live
singer climbed the speaker rig in the pissing rain and ended up hanging from the top from one hand, guitar still slung off his back.

The Wolfmother album isn't bad, it's just not as good as I hoped. I was expecting an avalanche of hardcore rock, and it didn't quite deliver that.

when I saw them (Airbourne)
he ended the encore by smashing an unopened pint can of Stella against his head until it exploded in a 6' fountain of lager. It was extremely entertaining.

superb

They're playing London in January
Maybe you could be persuaded to come up for it, taking in some epic drugs'n'drink'n'curry action along the way? I've a sofabed.
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 11:27, Reply)
think January might still be skint
my sojourn to london may well have to be a little later than that. we shall see though. would be good to tie it into a gig.
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 11:33, Reply)
I'm prepared to buy your ticket if that would help.

(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 11:34, Reply)
A most generous offer!
their website says they are playing london in april.
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 11:37, Reply)
In which case that's the one.
Shall I get you a ticket then?

In the next two weeks I have a 40k cheque coming my way. It's to pay off my horrible loans and cards but I shall treat myself to a bit of splurge and don't mind one iota cutting you in on the deal.
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 11:39, Reply)
I'll have to check the dates and get back to you
hmm, a thursday too. I'm planning a long holiday a week or so after so will need to check the leave situation as well.

I'm touched by the offer though
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 11:43, Reply)
My very great pleasure.
If you fancy it just let me know - I'll buy the tickets in around a fortnight, and I'll give you a nudge just before I do.
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 11:47, Reply)
nice thanks
if I can't make this one it'd be good to tie a visit in with another gig, so I'll keep my eyes on what's coming up.

Discovered the other day that Monster Magnet are touring in December, all midweek (no leave left) and nowhere near me. Fucking gay.

I'm doing Motorhead and The Damned on Saturday
and thus Gong/Hillage the night before is looking decidedly iffy.

Gong I've seen loads of times, but Hillage only picked up a guitar again last year (after a 20-odd year break doing ambient dance stuff) and that was with Gong, so the opportunity to see his solo stuff is something I never thought I'd ever have the chance to see. He's in my top three guitarists ever, without doubt.
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 11:58, Reply)
I'll need to check Hillage out, and Gong for that matter.
I'm currently bored by almost everything I've listened to all weekend. Apart from Tool, or in fact anything involving Maynard from Tool.

or Clutch.
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 12:01, Reply)
You really do
Gong can be a bit silly (in a whimsical psychedelic way) at times but the musicianship is exemplary.

My tips:

GONG:
Gong Live Etc
You (the third and best instalment of the Flying Teapot series)
Camembert Electrique
Floating Anarchy

beware Pierre Moerlen's Gong which they morphed into in the late 70s, dull noodly jazz rock. Shamal being a bad but ty[pical example.

HILLAGE:
Fish Rising (utterly brilliant, an all time favourite)
Live Herald
Green
Live at Deeply Vale
Germany 77 (DVD - brilliant)

avoid his 80s stuff. He was right to pack it in and go ambient by then.
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 12:15, Reply)
cheers
I'll check some out
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 12:54, Reply)
I'd recommend a band to you, but their most recent stuff is nowhere near as good as the old
so you might go onto myspace and be put off by it.

Not sure if you will like them anyway, but might be worth a go....
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 11:26, Reply)
Nothing to do with Average Bears are they?
I've heard they are THE FUTURE.
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 11:28, Reply)
heh
no. they are the future though.

These are a modern prog group. Pure Reason Revolution. Quite a lot of harmonies. songs are very dynamic. You might hate it though. Try and get their first album Cautionary Tales for the Brave, because it's better than the rest of their stuff. I could probably send it to you tonight if you fancy it.
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 11:32, Reply)
Go for it then mate
I'll give 'em a whirl
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 11:33, Reply)
I'll email myself as a reminder
I'm sure there are some other new bands that I like who you would probably like too. I'll have to go through my collection.

Did you listen to Black Mountain?
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 11:37, Reply)
I did not (damn you pothead memory issues!)
Thanks for reminding me.

tugnuts tip of the day...
...seek out the 'Death' reissue of 'For the Whole World to See'.

It kicks bottom.

(Can I say 'bottom' or is that verboten?)
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 11:50, Reply)
'It kicks breasts' isn't allowed.
'Bottom' I think you're OK with.

(thanks for the tip, Tuggers old bean)
(, Tue 24 Nov 2009, 12:00, Reply)
"It kicks breasts"?
That really is not on. You not only mentioned those 'saucy dumplings' but are implying acts of violence against them.

I thereby snitch on Monty and claim my five pounds*.

(*Which I will not blow on 'Massive Jugs Monthly'.)
