Im confused.
Upgrading the computer by putting newer software on will probably make it slower as newer software makes greater demands on the computer.

You want to be upgrading the hardware. More RAM would give the most noticeable boost but you might be better off buying a new PC depending on how old it is.

Also wiping it and reinstalling windows will speed things up for a bit until it gets clogged up again.

Get a budget and spunk out on the best you can afford.

p.s. a hard drive is but one component. Not the computer ;)
