Some animals go throughphantom pregnancies. My friend's spaniel used get broody about once a year and nick a soft toy to carry around and look after, etc. She used to pick those McDonald's toys that make a noise when you squeeze them, especially the one that was released with Disney's 101 Dalmations, it barked.
She also once loved my sister's hamster to death, that was less cute.
