Me too,
I work with autistic kids and often refer parents to the N.A.S. for help/advice/resources as well as buying books from them myself. What do you do then?
(, Fri 26 Mar 2010, 22:16, 2 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
I work with adults
Learning disabilities and challenging behavior. We recently got two of our highly autistic residents signed up - so we get info packs, activities, all that sort of thing. It costs a bit but it does seem to be paying off.

Ooh, crikey!
Hat off to you sir! One of these days I'd like to graduate to working with adults (got a job offer a couple of years ago at a new residential "half way house" for adults with autism - unfortunately I couldn't meet the shift requirements at the time). At 5'2" I'm content with kids for now though ;o)

Ahh, it can be pretty tough sometimes
We get the occasional "incident" but to be honest, for the most part it's rewarding, and fun. And yeah, done some work with kids with autism/asd but only in mainstream schools. Equally challenging, but in different ways.
(, Fri 26 Mar 2010, 23:15, Reply)
Yeah, I'd say tough and rewarding in equal amounts.
A couple of years ago I worked in a *special* autism unit which catered for really little kids, aged 4-9. They varied so much in their abilities to communicate or even function - but not a day went by without "incidents". Poor DG was often embarrassed at the looks he'd get when out with me in summer months (sleeveless tops) as I was never without bruises/bite marks etc. I was constantly having to explain that my man was not a wife-beater, and try to convince folk that my battle scars had been sustained at work :o( Still, that paled into insignificance when one of the kids began to develop speech, or any similar major breakthrough.

Haha my cat's so savage
that most of the time I look like a self-harming emosexual.
(, Fri 26 Mar 2010, 23:38, Reply)
I like "emosexual" better than "manstruating"
Do you have the copyright for that or can I borrow it?

(p.s. DG is calling you a shirter over my shoulder.)

THE BOUNDER!
How's about we trade one term for the other?
(, Fri 26 Mar 2010, 23:50, Reply)
Yes, he's quite the cad.
What say we share both nicely?
(, Fri 26 Mar 2010, 23:52, Reply)
Agreed.

I plan to unleash "manstruating emosexual"

I'll have you know I taught Peter Bowles all he knew.

The missus was going to reply but I'm afraid she's off listening to Young Americans on the old gramamaphone. *tch*

really I had my little feet tucked under the ironing board.

An experience not unlike an evening with David Jones.
Frustrating, tedious and altogether unpleasant.

Unlike Little Feat.

Wasn't he a lumpy pirate of the Carribean?

Right, I am now officially annihilated.

Good night.

I thought
it was a sarcastic dig at his colleagues. No?

Perhaps I am just 'not very nice'.

EDIT: CONFIRMED!

I'm feeling a strange mixture of pride and shame right now.

The second chap is clearly enjoying the occasion to the fullest
Why must you mock him?!?
(, Sat 27 Mar 2010, 0:23, Reply)
Because he's on the internet
and that's what we do!
(, Sat 27 Mar 2010, 0:31, Reply)
Mock him? Never!
The man's a wizard.

And chips!

The fellow
looks like he may enjoy chips rather too frequently than is quite good for him.
(, Sat 27 Mar 2010, 0:37, Reply)
He clearly wins the dance-off
With that rotund lady. She simply cannot compete with his moves. But what the fuck is that Patrick Moore xylophone tribute act doing on the bill at the Coney Island Rockabilly Festival?

That's what I want to know.
(, Sat 27 Mar 2010, 0:41, Reply)
You may never know, my dear chap.
Speaking of which, I'm about to dose DG with some codeine phosphate, as his head has been throbbing for some 48 hours. You should see it - he gets like Dylan from The Magic Roundabout ;o)
