Inside Windows, iTunes is an awful piece of software.It's just so bloated, a complete hog, one of the bigger points of music players is that they're unobtrusive, let you do whatever you normally do in the mean-time.
If you're only bothered by music, I recomend Winamp (free) and the iPod plug-in (free) to do the same job, but it won't do anything appart from music, if I remember correctly.
