Then there's the cost of the material. Silks, taffetta etc is expensive.But yes, there will be a good mark-up price as well as in all quality goods.

the bottom line is, that would be a large proportion of our intended budgetthe mrs was adamant she wouldn't spend anywhere near that, and I'm hoping that she can find something she likes as much for much less, otherwise I'll feel irrationally guilty!

I'm not agreeing that you should let her pay that much.I'm just saying that expensive dresses are very well made and beautifully crafted.
