I had hamstersbut I suppose they are more an entry level pet
i had heard they smell. Perhaps a guinea pig or rabbit would be better

Guinea pigs urine is unscented. They are shitting machines though. I'd only get one again if I had time to devote to it and I'd get two of them so they're not left alone to get bored.I've seen too many rabbits with various diseases over the last year to even contemplate getting one. They die far too easily.

I used to have rabbits and guinea pigs when I was a kidthey're awesome. Sure wish rodenty pets didn't live such short lives :(
