it only occurs during REM sleep, which is why you can still think about your dreams etc. REM sleep is known as paradoxical sleep because, outwardly, you're paralysed (which is true, your muscles are completely relaxed and there is no muscle tension save for the muscles moving your eyeballs), but internally, your brain waves are fairly close to how they are when you're awake, your heart rate, body temperature, breathing rate are all elevated.

I did a bit of reading because it happens to me a lot. Apparantly it's linked to tiredness

I've noticed that if I'm a bit sleep deprived, it's more likely to occur - but it hasn't happened once this year since I've gone on meds and gotten my sleep pattern back :)

I've got insomnia, no obvious medical reason for it, but I get it quite a lot, plus hypnic jerks etc quite regularly. I know more sleep would solve it, but that's how it goes

I didn't have a reason for my insomnia either - it just happened.

I have a feeling next year at uni will force me to have a later bed time though.

I get back from my trip about 2 weeks before uni starts. Frantic packing will ensue me thinks.
