My best advice
and this is serious.

Don't tell anyone. Don't make a big deal out of it. Just do it quietly and get on with it. Make excuses as to why you aren't nipping out for one if you are at the pub or whatever.

I've seen countless people failing to give up
after announcing they are doing so and making new years resolutions and stuff.

Yes, this.
Vipros is right. Don't make a fuss at all. A mate just mentioned last week that he'd noticed I didn't smoke any more, had I decided to quit? I stopped in january.

My uncle
chewed gum. The mint taste made the cigarettes taste so foul he ended up being physically averse to them.

I can't hack the gum at all
it makes my heart go all twitchy

Don't chew it when browsing pics of me on FB then

yeah definitely this
every time I made a big song and dance about it being my Last Fag I always returned to them, but one day I just stopped and when my friends offered me one I'd say "no I'm ok at the mo". I think the idea that I could have one any time I wanted made it easier to quit, whereas if I told myself I wasn't allowed one then I wanted one even more.
