Protesting the visit of the Pope
sure there are some people who do it on valid grounds, but it makes me absolutely sick to death of facebook morons writing stuff like 'OMG!!11 He like totally rapes children and should be burned.' He's a fucking dignitary and representative. And anyone too lazy to get off their arse to protest at foreign leaders who have done far more disgraceful things, or indeed at other religious leaders with even worse faults, should be ashamed of themselves

I've got a degree of respect for the guy who attempted to make a citizens' arrest on Robert Mugabe
But I also was amused at the kicking he got for it.

I've forgotten his name, but I know he irritates me.
(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:19, Reply)
I think his name was "Lefty McRight-on"
and he was the student organiser for the polyuniversity of south Basingstoke.

hahaha

No it was Peter Tatchell, Monty's best friend IRL

(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:24, Reply)
He calls him "Tatchy"

(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:25, Reply)
And he calls him often.

"That's not his name, that's not his name"

(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:29, Reply)
What is it then?

(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:39, Reply)
so you don't think it'd acceptable to protest about their standing on the use of condoms in Africa when African HIV rates are so high?

(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:19, Reply)
No, I think she's saying he agrees with people who are protesting for a valid reason
But most are protesting over the same sort of stuff she mentions, rather than the condoms, or the treatment of women.
(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:21, Reply)
pretty much this
I think people can protest over women, gays, etc.

But not over senseless hysteria that's been whipped up into a media frenzy
(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:23, Reply)
If people are able to form their own opinions on things, and decide that they disagree with them, and protest as such, then fair enough
But the amount of people I personally know who will read one thing and base everything on that is ridiculous.

On Monday, I had to convince my friend that Ratzinger was NOT part of the Nazi party. Yes, he was Hitler Youth, but he was conscripted into that. My friend was determined that he was an active member of the actual party, when I pointed out that Ratzinger was only about 12 when WWII broke out, he lost his wind somewhat.
(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:30, Reply)
you're right
I actually know people who think Ratzinger abused children himself and that he is a convicted paedophile
(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:33, Reply)
Tell them you'll do them a trade
Everytime you say that, you get to either slap them in the forehead, or punch them in the tits? If they don't say anything like that, they'll stay safe for fod-slaps or tit-punches.
(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:39, Reply)
I think it is entirely unacceptable
when will people grasp very simple logic.

In Catholicism there is far more stigma to sex outside marriage, than there is to contraception. AIDS in Africa is not just spread by unprotected sex. It's spread by migrant men who have no problem with adultery, no problem with rape, and indeed believe fucking a virgin will cure them. Any man who does that is NOT A CATHOLIC. Nobody who would do any of those things, and yet sanctimoniously claim they're Catholic so can't wear condoms, is an actual catholic. How hard is it to grasp?

Like it or not the Catholich church is one of the biggest purveyors of aid in the developed world. They do some sterling work, and I actually know personally some fantastic people involved out there. What right does the world have to dictate to them exactly what they should do?

I'm not even a proper practising Catholic. But hypocrisy disgusts me in all forms
(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:22, Reply)
So...
You are asking me to accept that there are no practising Catholic men in Africa who have contracted and passed on HIV as a result of being told that using condoms is a sin?

Sorry but I don't believe that.
(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:29, Reply)
I asked you to accept no such thing
I asked you to accept that those people are in the smallest of minorities. The risk of catching AIDS if you are married to one person and don't cheat (we're pre-supposing this hypothetical person is not infected from birth) is much lower, with or without condoms.
(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:31, Reply)
Ok... but does this mean in your opinion that a practising Catholic who is an adulterer is not a real Catholic?

(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:33, Reply)
Nope
They're a Catholic still. They are however a hypocrite to the deepest bones. And these people know it. They have forfeited the excuse to use their religion as an objection to anything
(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:37, Reply)
What if their bird is shit in bed though?
Does that not give them a free pass?
(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:45, Reply)
only if she actually shits the bed

(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:47, Reply)
The problem with Catholicism
And all other religions, is that they've failed to apply modern wisdom in their teaching.
(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:49, Reply)
The problem with Catholicism
Is the fuckwits who think going to confession will make it alright.
(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 13:25, Reply)
Ahem
Like it or not the Catholich church is one of the biggest purveyors of aidAIDS in the developed world.
(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:30, Reply)

I've since seen your edit and I am not slating the Catholic church for aid or the compassionate work undertaken by some people in the Church.

The world does have the right to protest. Against any religion. I personally prefer protesting against Scientologists.
(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:32, Reply)
It has the right to protest of course.
But the Catholic Church has the right to practice religion. Part of its religion is not supplying condoms. Contrary to popular belief, they don't wrestle condoms out of the hands of Africans, they just choose not to supply them. That is their right and preogrative.

Now Scientologists are a worthy target haha
(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:36, Reply)
I feel like a troll now haha

(, Wed 8 Sep 2010, 12:53, Reply)
Don't. It's good to have a reasonable exchange. Better than a lot of other posts on OT.
