I need it to look like a non-existant background though and the weave on blackout material is pretty coarseI think. I really don't know though to be honest.

If the focus of the pics is the cakes,he should easily be able to blur the background out. So use white bedsheets or something

That's true, I have quite a bit of white coutil for my corset making which is thick white fabricbut it's got a herringbone pattern so I thought that might show up, but I never thought about the focus thing. I know nothing about photography.
