I told a kid who was impressed with the staff that it was great if I got lost in a crowd, and then held it up and turned it about like a periscope.

There is truth to this.
Much of the time I stalked about like Death, but occasionally got a bit goofy.

I also found that much of my manner when I'm in a crowd is conveyed by facial expressions. People can't see you smile back at them. I took to nodding slightly to people, which worked nicely.

One woman told me that the mask was creepy. I responded, "You are familiar with Phantom Of The Opera, aren't you? There is a reason I wear the mask."
