I'd advise against bringing a significant other to your first bash, or you'd likely find it difficult to shift from conversation to conversation, which is important.

And I have an idea of what to talk about with whom, whereas she'll just be bemused. On the other hand, the chances of her having no problem with me buggering off to London or wherever for the weekend without her is slim, let alone if I say the purpose is to meet a load of randoms off the internet

The problem is that I've been that person, though I feel I kept myself together well. They were serving a very tasty ale, after about 5 pints I could feel the room spinning, turns out it was about 6.2%. Was a little quiet after that...
