I just don't accept them in the first place
but then I also have to be careful not to accept friend requests from students at the Uni I work at, even if I know them and don't teach them directly.

I'm entriely selective about who I add.
I think to myself, do I want this person knowing the ins and outs of my life? If I saw this person in real life, would there be anything more than a perfunctory catch-up chat then parting? If the answer's no to either of these questions, no friendy accepty.

I had a big cull on FB recently - got rid of a load of volunteers I had to keep in touch with for Crisis - but no need now I have given up volunteering for them.
I also removed a couple of my gf's mates who I don't like - this went down badly apparently.
