He really can'the beat him up quite badly. What I'm puzzled about though is why Sam stayed with him. Soulless Sam presumably has no emotional connection to Dean, so the better option logically would be to stay with the family. Wonder if his memories hold him back

I think maybe he doesn't trust Samuel either...so he wants to be on the side that suits his needs better.
