(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 22:59, 1 reply, 15 years ago)
Done anything fun today?

(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 22:59, Reply)
The usual routine of chemicals, machinery and paperwork.
No, not really.

doesn't sound fascinating
but I could be wrong

There's something deeply satisfying about turning water, powder, wax and grease into shelf-ready cosmetics.

(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 23:07, Reply)
which cosmetics do you make?
Or is it just the same thing in ten different containers?
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 23:16, Reply)
Quite a few different types, both purely decorative and toiletries.
As I work for a contract manufacturer, we make everything from the big names to cheap rubbish; the complexity of the formulations and the difference in quality is similarly variable, but the difference in manufacturing cost is nowhere near as great as the difference in retail price.

I begrudge paying money
for cosmetics in general. But I generally find the variation in certain products enough to justify the extra money

As with everything, the best performance/price balance is somewhere in the middle.

Get rid of the machinery and paperwork and you could be Monty.
What machinery do you get to use during the day?

Mixing vessels with built-in weighing scales and emulsifiers, the bulk liquid delivery system for these vessels, washout programmes for production lines, the pigging system for static storage tanks, and hand-pulled trucks and forklifts.
Plus a computer database for updating the warehouse stock list and the production schedule as necessary.

And in layman's terms?

(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 23:11, Reply)
Mixing chemicals together on a large (200kg - 10 ton) scale, cleaning out the vessels, tanks and lines, moving the ingredients from storage onto the plant, and logging my workload.
Oh, and testing other people's batches to make sure they're OK to go out to the customer before they get filled.

Proper work!
