Alt: I miss the free festivals.
They aren't here any more for several reasons:

1) Raves ruined them
2) The Criminal Justice Bill, brought in because of point 1
3) The death of the 'traveller' community (ie non-gyppo) due in no small part to changes in the 'signing on' rules

I miss them so, so much. They were wonderful. The sense of barely-contained anarchy was palpable. They really were exciting in a way that no-one who missed them will ever properly understand. The word-of-mouth manner in which you found out about them, dodging police roadblocks...just excellent fun.

The perfect way to spend your summer weekends.

I played at a number of 'site parties' which were smaller scale versions of free festies.

They were more like medieval fairs than pop festivals really.
The music was incidental to the whole experience, none of this 3-day-gig stuff.

I was sorry to hear about the death of eco-warrior Swampy the other day.
Seemingly he had a heart problem that was successfully diagnosed but there was a problem with the treatment.

They tried to give him a bypass, but he protested.
