because they have it far easier than I ever did when I worked there 20 years ago for beer tokens as a student.
When I was there, you put 12 burgers on the grill, when you had to turn them after a minute, you put another 12 on. When they needed turning, the first 12 were ready, put on the toasted and dressed buns and served up. 12 cheeseburgers or 6 Big Macs every 60 seconds, with a team of three, this could be kept up all day if needed.
All that for £1.80 per hour.
Nowadays, they have clamshell grills. Put burgers on, shut lid. Put buns in toaster. Both have alarms. When the grill's done, it opens itself for christ's sake.

was a shout from the production area when we got realy busy.
20 meat down when you turned them you had to put another 20 down

the 12/6 turn lay.
and racking fries meant sharing a big bag between 5 or 6 baskets equally by eye. Not from a hopper that drops a measured portion in the basket.

All I remember is it was bloody hot work, managing that, dressing burgers, toasting buns and shouting the STG (Spotty Teenaged Git) to mope the floor every now and then.

to do it with just two people, but you had to do a sort of rotation thing and not get in each other's way.

Mind you, I had some jumped-up shift runner try to teach me to Ajax, on my last ever shift. Logic clearly wasn't his strong point. Walking off shift made him understand soon enough.

I never realised McDonald's achieved their special ambience by employing spotty teens to mope the floor. I thought they just moped because they were teens. And spotty.

that these days they have to also try and cook a much larger, more complicated menu to cater for modern tastes? Frying chicken/fish/apple pies/veggie burgers, grilling chicken for deli sandwiches and salads, steaming as well as toasting buns, learning and preparing the flavour of the month, not to mention cooking a breakfast menu which has expanded somewhat since the days of the humble egg muffin.
