This is a question Devastating Put-Downs

Amorous Badger says: I once saw a former manager of mine being asked to 'sit down and let your mouth have a chance to speak' by his senior. What's the best heckle/putdown/riposte you've ever seen? (Hint: Recycled 'Your mum' jokes does not make an answer)

Linguistics lecturer
Lecturer: "In most languages, two negatives make a positive. 'I do not dislike this' means I like it. However, the opposite is not true. Two positives do not make a negative."

Shouted from back of lecture hall: "Yeah, right"

That story's been doing the rounds of philosophy for ages.
I think I've heard it in relation to Quine and Cavell, but can't be sure.

Indeed
It's here, too: 192.220.96.201/two-positives.html . I think I first read it in the Guardian Saturday magazine about 20 years ago. Still makes me laugh though (although admittedly not as much as FENTON!!!!!).

I don't get it.
"Yeah, right." Means, essentially, "that is correct" -- isn't that a positive? The tone of voice provides a negative -- so this is two positives and a negative make a negative.
Not clever in the slightest.

Say it in a more sarcastic tone.

"The tone of voice provides a negative...".
I just don't think it's clever.
