Rubbish Towns
I once went to Basildon. It was closed, I got chased by a bunch of knuckle-dragged yobs until I was lost in a maze of concrete alleyways and got food poisoning off pie. Tell us about the awful places you've visited or have your home.
Thanks to SpankyHanky for the suggestion

I live in the London Borough of Croydon
It's crap. Not a week goes by with out numerous stabbings and shootings. In fact there was a drive by shooting about 20 yards away from my door not too long ago.
Before that I lived in Beckenham, not too bad, just a bit slow for my liking.
And before that I lived in Selhurst, it was a friggin' nightmare. Never any parking spaces on Wednesday or Saturdays because of the football ground right around the corner. Got broke into twice, the second time just two days after I'd replaced all of the stuff that had been nicked the first time. Bastards!
Then there was Lambeth, it was so bad I wouldn't even go out at night, yes it was that scary.
And before I move to London I lived in Dundee, the drug and HIV capital of the UK. My am I glad I got out of there when I did!

With you there - I spent 3 years in Dundee in the Eighties.
I still shudder when I'm reminded of it.

I once
fell asleep on the train to Streatham (through extreme drunkenness) and woke up on an empty train in Croydon. It was the last train on a Friday night.
I've lived in London a long time, (including Brixton) but the bus journey from Croydon back to Streatham via Thornton Heath and various concrete deathtraps with 'Hill' in the name is not one I aim to take again in a hurry.
Luckily I live in Battersea now so I need never go to Croydon again in my life.

Me too
Says it all that Croydon town centre has two Greggs shops, three McDonalds, and two Wetherspoons. There are what feels like hundreds of beggars in the town, and there is a big YMCA in the centre too.
Whilst there are lots of bars serving Stella or pinot grigio to the masses, there is only one pub that I will go to, as it's the only unchavvy or unponcy place in town.
It's a crap town, and anything towards West Croydon and Thornton Heath is crack city. But you know what? I don't have to live in Croydon, but somehow, I still like it.

Hoorah!
I live in Croydon and I like it too and understand why everyone says it's shit. I think it's shit but also quite good. I kind of revel in the shitness I think. Hoorah for the crapness of Croydon, spiritual home of the stabby (and the necrophiliacs... the story of Sally Ann Bowman comes to mind)

Dundee
Scumdee is also No. 1 for abortion and teenage pregnancies.
As soon as I can drive I am outta here. Although I am replacing Dundee with Kirkcaldy!

Agreed
Croydon is a hole, but Beckenham may yet become interesting, sandwiched as it is between Croydon, Penge, Bromley and Lewisham.
For now, I appreciate the quiet retreat it (sort of) offers.

Croydon...
...isn't the most attractive place in the world (by a long chalk) and isn't somewhere I'd choose to have a night out, but it's got a bloody good shopping centre so it's not all bad. Plus it's got Beanos, which, while not as good as it was in it's heyday, is still worthy of a mooch from time to time.

I hate to break it to you..
..but Beanos has shut down. There is a note stuck in the window saying that the shop couldn't compete with cheap online shops and illegal downloads, and had to go out of business.
