I'm broke, you're broke, we're all broke. Even the smug guy on the balcony with the croissant hasn't got two AmEx gold cards to rub together these days. Tell everybody your schemes to save cash.

buy tinned fruit; put tinned fruit in a bucket with a lot of sugar; let it ferment. There may be a more sophisticated process involved, maybe some cheap gin primer or something. Hopefully the Scourge of Wales will return and tell us.

I got a bucket with an air-tight lid.
I cut a circle in the top and fitted an airlock (see here) - They're a couple of pounds from Wilkinsons.
Sterilised the whole lot with Milton, the stuff they use for baby's bottles.
Then five cans of tinned fruit, four kilos of sugar, a packet of powdered yeast, and about forty litres of water.
Bang the lid on firm, fill the airlock half up with water.
Leave the whole thing in a warm place for a month.
Drink it.
