I suspect my milk was already spoiled by being left by the school radiator for 3 hours.

Why did they do that?
My guess is that it is because hot milk is thought to be soporific but I was never sure whether it was that or just plain meanness.

I remember carrying the crates one day when they arrived and they were nice and cold,

I, also, carried in the milk one day.
We were told to put them next to the heater and I recall asking why but being told not to be so sill,y or some such, by the old hag (probably at least 30) of a teacher at the time.
