Why did they do that?My guess is that it is because hot milk is thought to be soporific but I was never sure whether it was that or just plain meanness.

I, also, carried in the milk one day.We were told to put them next to the heater and I recall asking why but being told not to be so sill,y or some such, by the old hag (probably at least 30) of a teacher at the time.
