This is a question Amazing displays of ignorance

Sandettie Light Vessel Automatic tells us: "My dad's friend told us there's no such thing as gravity - it's just the weight of air holding us down". Tell us of times you've been floored by abject stupidity. "Whenever I read the Daily Express" is not a valid answer.

Ignorance
Is lack of knowledge of facts or details that a person would be expected to know - stuff like the Earth orbiting the Sun.

Stupidity is not necessarily related to lack of knowledge. It just means that you act like a twat - i.e. jumping into a river without knowing how deep it is and being surprised when you impale your foot on a submerged branch would be stupid. Thinking that the Sun orbits the Earth rather than the other way around would be ignorant.

yep you can be
ignorant and intelligent at the same time. you could be someone who's very sharp and insightful and a quick thinker but simply not have good general knowledge.

My take
Ignorance is a lack of facts - the building blocks of knowledge. This can be remedied by inserting knowledge
Stupidity is a lack of the faculties required to use your knowledge - an inability to put the building blocks together. This is much, much harder to tackle than ignorance, since even clever people might be ignorant on a specific subject, which can be remedied, but the stupid (who simply happen to be ignorant, because they're stupid) - well, teaching them is like trying to push water uphill. With a sieve.

difference
You can argue with ignorance but there's no arguing with stupidity.

I'm very ignorant about quantum mechanics
but that does not make me stupid.

An ignorant person doesn't know that a tomato is a fruit.
A stupid person, on finding out that a tomato is a fruit, puts in it a fruit salad

Ignorant is having to be told once, stupid is being told ten times and still not getting it.
