They're both quite different. Very relaxing song to play on an acoustic guitar I find.

He's not singing it in the same way Trent Reznor sings it. It's a different song altogether, therefore "the point" that you refer to is totally different in both songs. It's not so much Johnny Cash missed it, more that he wasn't aiming for it at all. The only real similarity is that they both led very regretful lives which, I believe, is what made Johnny Cash want to cover it in the first place.
