There's saving money, and there's being tight: saving money at the expense of other people, or simply for the miserly hell of it.

Absolutely minted. Big house in the country, a garage filled with vintage cars, you know the drill.
Invited my mum and dad, plus little me (aged maybe about 8) out to their sprawling estate for tea.
After small talk in the sitting room, we were beckoned into their vast banqueting hall.
What were we served?
Jam fucking sandwiches. Also egg.
I kid you not. Strawberry to be precise.

was this tea as in 'morning or afternoon tea', or tea as in 'the main meal of the day'?
Pretty bad either way, but much more so in the latter case.

Long time ago now, but it was definitely dark when we got there, so I would estimate that it was around 5/6pm ish.

They have little tiny cakes too and very small brews. Were there sugar cubes and tongs to pick them up? Posh people have them too.

It wasn't because you were so high at the time that you needed tasty comestibles to satisfy your munchies then.
