keep the cutlery in the dish washerand simply turn it on 1hr before you need a clean knife/fork/plate etc

Agreed.If I had the dosh I would have a couple of indistrial type dishwashers or, even better, a customised one -- that way cuttlery can just be stored and cleaned in the same place. Same goes for plates, pots, pans and the like too.
Keeping things in drawers and cupboards to go dirty is pointlessly inneficient.
