Should you find the nest, pour washing up water down it.The surfactants in washing-up liquid stop bubbles forming around the ants and allow the water to drown them -- I've a feeling that some other ingredients are toxic to ants too but don't know the chemicals or the reasons, does work though.
Oh, and thanks for the talc tip -- I'm now wondering if it works on spiders also.
