Two thoughts
Not everyone lives in London, and those who don't are not strange bumpkins who come up to the big city to sell their pigs once a year. Therefore they don't know that the doors will open.

Also why are there buttons marked open if they don't do anything.

Usually they will have traversed more then one station on their way to their destination
Now , consider, the doors opening miraculuously without pushing the magic button takes how many stations reinforcement for the really unobservant and dim to apprehend?

Try other country`s metros, I have no or few problems, even the ones I couldn`t read the signs cos not my alphabet. Use a bit of commonsense.

Unfortunately I have also never done a less than two stop with no-one else getting off to take a guide from so I cannot honestly empathise, as I have never experienced this.
But there is a very slim possibility that these "lucky , " special" people fell into that very rare category.

Perhaps? Or am I being too kind?
