The forearm sharpening in reverse shaving motion is equivalent to using a sharpening steel: it will remove a built-up bead of dead metal at the edge, but still not change the profile of the blade. Effective more often than not, but for how long?
Swiping in the opposite direction (same as shaving) will actually sharpen the blade itself (do not attempt on your own skin [duh], that's why you pay for new blades: you can't stand it).

I just drag mine along my arm but as I use single blade safety razors it's cheap enough not to piss aroundresharpening then.
