I've always wondered about that 'same MO' bit
I think that it is just an artifact of the techniques used to catch serial killers. I think serial killers who use different MOs are less likely to be found out as serial killers as there is less reason to tie the multiple murders together.
Be interesting to find out how many serial killers are using different MOs for each killing. Something the massive government DNA database might be able to tell us.

Serial killers
generally use the same modus operandi every time because being a serial killer isn't just about killing as many people as you possibly can without being caught, it generally has a sexual motive. As a man who masturbates with some alarming frequency I can tell you that some things work and some things don't, and you stick with what you enjoy e.g. jump leads to the nipples, rather than trying it with a cucumber up your end when that's not something you fanatasise about. I imagine serial killers have their own specific peccadillos and it just wouldn't be as satisfying if they did something different.

Sure, it'd be rational to switch your MO up every time but frankly it'd be more rational not to slice up whores to get your jollies in the first place.
